Even if by some miracle these guys are successful we absolutely should still do our re-gerrymander

These resolutions are so basic and simple, should be the easiest things in the world. No bombs that fall from airplanes and no machine guns. There’s another bill out there that throws in no tank or artillery shells.

Thing is Israel would still be able to source that stuff, but not at the same scale

One of things that’s so frustrating, that maybe this moment we’re in is starting to shift, is what you’re talking about where a US president that wanted to induce a change in behavior absolutely could.

We haven’t even scratched the surface of the power we can bring to bear here.

Makes sense. Yeah, absolutely needs to be imposed from the outside.

I am puzzled at the idea that one state with equal rights is an easier lift politically. That seems to be the consensus these days, I think it’s wish casting.

My understanding is that East Jerusalem Palestinians were offered citizenship at one point and most declined. I don’t know if that was a one time deal or if it’s still something that is available.

Well I’m assuming there’s not going to a pullout, that would basically mean civil war. And the whole thing is a nonstarter in Israel, any solution other than more of what we have today is going to have to be imposed from the outside.

This isn't the impediment that people think it is. There are millions of Palestinian citizens of Israel. No reason there can't be Israeli citizens of Palestine. Some will stay, and they can live under Palestinian sovereignty. Many will say "no thanks" and move back over the line.

City of Berkeley should do this, I’m only slightly joking

Easy to imagine PE has wrought havoc on the construction industry, driving up costs and making it meaningfully more expensive to build housing.

Well would you look at that

And that is why feminist economics its whole entire own branch of the discipline!

I understand that this attitude is wrong in a sense but I’ve never let that stop me before

25.07.2025 17:34 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah this was one of those Econ class things that always drove me nuts, like yes I understand intellectually the difference between economic profit and accounting profit but my bank account only cares about accounting profit.

25.07.2025 17:34 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah I’ve suddenly confused myself I don’t know which side of this I’m arguing anymore

Adjust for the fact that you’re probably buying β€œhigher quality” ingredients while ending up with a worse burrito and even without all that other accounting the numbers start to even out.

25.07.2025 17:24 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Really a question or what you mean by β€œcheaper.” At home the only costs you account for are the ingredients. Yes ingredients will be cheaper on a unit basis for the joint, but costs include labor, rent, insurance, compliance, etc. At home you implicitly have similar costs but you don’t count them.

After court reform and campaign finance reform, media ownership laws have to be next up on the list

My absolute worst housing opinion is that this the cap should be raised so that longtime homeowners don’t feel as compelled to die in houses that are way too big for them. If they stay till they’re dead then stepped up basis hits anyway and their heirs pay nothing.

It’s a good start but one new justice every two years for 12 years isn’t nearly aggressive enough. If we’re trying to avoid the appearance of the reforms being partisan, the reforms are going to fail.

More and more people are saying (although this is a though one because it’s a very sensitive issue for some people)

Developer walks away from building supportive housing at People's Park RCD was supposed to build about 125 units as part of UC Berkeley's project at the park. The university says it will find a new developer.

Not a funding issue, according to this article anyway. Developer just decided to focus on projects with fewer headaches.

I’m agnostic about PSH on this site, city’s got $14 million burning a hole in the housing trust fund allocated for this project, I think they should pull the plug and use it on something that might benefit someone this decade.

21.07.2025 03:39 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It doesn’t - the homeless housing developer pulled out a few years ago. City still has money for the project ready to go but UC needs to find a new developer.

These people need to know that every bribe will be investigated, every corrupt deal will be undone, and every perpetrator will be prosecuted.

Why would I want to own trusted local outlets in Michigan, Arizona, Florida, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin plus a national paper with reasonably good brand? What possible use is there for that?

18.07.2025 21:49 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Gannett is sitting right there!

It’s a public company, worth a half a billion. A rich person or group of rich people could just buy it and then you own papers in all of these places.

18.07.2025 21:48 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

This is the way. Land use reform at local/state, building codes at state/national, money cannon from Washington with some anti-trust for builders sprinkled on top. Easy peasy (lol)

18.07.2025 17:25 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I think the way to square that circle is with federal tax policy - on their own, builders will go through boom and bust cycles but won’t consistently oversupply, but Uncle Sam can meaningfully make the math work at scale like it does with SFH ownership.
