This whole election is about trust, and networks of trust. Hamsa and Dr. Dwayne Davis both have different ideas about who to trust. Hamsa views the establishment Democrat Jacob Frey, our unpopular incumbent mayor, as familiar, and therefore, more trustworthy. However, Dr. Dwayne Davis, who sat on a board dedicated to reforming the police, in the wake of George Floyd, thinks that Jacob Frey, who ignored all of the board’s recommendations, is full of shit.

While I don’t feel particularly magnetized to any of the candidates, I am supporting Omar Fateh purely out of nepotism. Omar Fateh isn’t my blood relative like Hamsa is, but he is the cousin of my cousin Sagal through marriage. There is a word that describes that relationship in my language, xidhid. (To my knowledge, there is no identical word for that phenomenon in English. If there is, I don’t know. There are a lot of words I don’t know.) I have a vested interest in his prosperity in the diaspora, as it’s intertwined with my own prosperity in the diaspora. But I have felt conflicted because Hamsa’s success, spiritually and professionally, takes obvious precedence over everyone else’s. I love him like a brother.
