a while back i read that creation and expansion of the middle-class in america followed the russian revolution because american elites were worried about what the future might bring.

the middle-class being a major stumbling block to making this country a better place is a feature, not a bug.

when systems aren't working because they tend to be active participants in those systems. of course it's bad to have your healthcare tied to a job, but having a job that includes healthcare helps you see yourself as being better than some "dummy" who doesn't get the same perk at their job.
