We say we want uplifting media, but our revealed preferences tell another story. We often pick darker, more intense content. This @npr.org piece covers our labβs research on why, and includes great advice from @aeden.bsky.social on building intentional media habits.

All I want in life is to persuade everyone, when encountering politics & culture, to ask, "why are we talking about this?" I mean that very literally: anything you encounter on your screens reflects a choice. Someone covered that, talked about that, rather than the many other things out there. Why?

Ok, not *that* kind of mind reading, but we have created a deep learning method capable of using single neuron recordings from people watching episodes of TV that can predict when they recall specific memories from the episode. 1/6

"How to turn off Google AI Overview in Chrome SOLVED
Open Chrome and put chrome://settings/searchEngines in the search box.
A tab will open which brings you to Search Engine > Manage Search Engines and Site Search.
Click on the Add button by the Site Search update. A box will open. Fill in the form with the following:
Name: AI Free Web
Shortcut: @web
URL: {google:baseURL}search?q=%s&udm=14
Youβll now see AI Free Web in the list of search engines.
Click on the three stacked dots on the right side of AI Free Web on the list. Select Make Default.
From now on, google functions pretty much like it did back when it was good. Good luck out there."
A while ago, we started a #FixItFriday tradition. We keep a running list - large & small, digital & analog, anything broken or annoying - and work on it together.
Today's 30-second fix: to remove AI "preview" from search results, here's the setting for Chrome users: www.reddit.com/r/techsuppor...

Screenshot from blog post that reads: Nor, especially, can they be addressed by American researchers moving abroad. When someone suggests that researchers just move abroad, I smile wanly, because I know that whoever is suggesting it has no idea of the scale of U.S. higher education relative to other markets nor of the difficulties other countries are facing. (What, just move to the many financially secure institutions of the United Kingdom? If you donβt keep up with UK higher ed news, then you may not recognize thatβs a darkly bitter joke.) Some folks will find moving abroad attractive but it is simply not possible for the 1.4 million U.S. post-secondary instructors to just move to Canada.

I'm preparing a public talk on the impact of digital technology on attention, and whether there is any evidence behind 'brain rot' (and help the public understand that researchers need public funds and support to work on this issue!). #cogsci, what message would you want the public to hear on this?
