When libraries get good news, that is good news for everyone. Library support is community support. #FundLibraries

I should phrase this more clearly: does anyone have favorite arguments—that appear in published writing guides—on why endnotes should NOT contain substantive discussion, including digressions and side conversations?

anyone have favorite arguments in favor of *not* putting substantive, discursive material in endnotes? ie, just dealing with citation and documentation matters in the notes?

a counter-example, e.g., would be Eric Hayot's discussion of the multiple things notes can achieve [cont]

“All-Time High,” the title sequence song in OCTOPUSSY, is so atrociously bad on every level it seems like sabotage

does the ending of ABSALOM, when Quentin shouts "I don't hate the South!," also count as one of these moments?

because @thescrvnr.bsky.social has been posting about Fleetwood Mac, it got me thinking about "Gold Dust Woman" and I came up with this interpretive analysis of it:

"it's like a 70s California drugs/outlaw movie somehow mixed with a giallo"

not to get self-congratulatory, but I think I nailed it

interesting example of how true nihilism is distinct from mordant shitposting

I feel silly for having come to FM so late in life (basically really started listening to them in about 2018!!) but that run from 75 to 82 merits obsessing over

I don’t even think he’s that wooden! I mean let’s be honest, it’s not the most complex role in cinema 😆

but Connery definitely had a kind of louche swagger that one no else has matched

!!! 🤣 how did you ruin it for him?

totally coincidentally, I’ve been rewatching some of the movies since they’re all on Netflix now.

I still say On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is the best 007 movie! and Lazenby isn’t as strong as Connery, but he’s not nearly so bad as some make him out to be

interested to hear what you think of it. I read all the Fleming novels in high school and never since

yeah, I know Asimov and Heinlein were bad dudes.

Arthur C Clarke? I dug him back in high school

(never read Asimov or Heinlein and don’t plan to)

I started reading PDK in my late 20s and am still slowly working my way through his stuff. I like him, despite his often flat characters. (and he writes women terribly)

Prince's Minneapolis book cover.

Prince's Minneapolis book cover.

For Minneapolis folks, Rashad Shabazz will be at Magers and Quinn on February 24 to present his new book Prince's Minneapolis: A Biography of Sound and Place. This is very cool work, in my view.
