Game Boy Look - Gradius: The Interstellar Assault

I was temporarily smitten with Gradius: The Interstellar Assault and ended up writing a short piece on it.

Consider checking the game out. There are much worse ways to spend 20 minutes.

My first memory is of drowning.

The fact I’m here to remember it means you should read this.

The UK is about to ban access to Wikipedia, just remember this bill was originally pitched as a means to protect kids from accessing porn.

They're both pretty cool games. The first one made me throw my GB across the room back then. It was my first contact with shmups and I loved/hated it. I've replayed it since and it's much easier than what I remembered.

It's pretty incredible that there are still people going "well, it's summer" :/

In France we've broken almost 100 absolute records, is that good?

Last summer, more than a hundred people crowded into the brightly lit basement of a Lululemon store in Manhattan at the invitation of Lacework, a cybersecurity unicorn. By all appearances, the startup seemed to enjoy an enviable position, with an $8.3 billion valuation and an assortment of blue-chip investors, including Sutter Hill Ventures, Coatue Management and Tiger Global Management. But behind the scenes, Lacework CEO Jay Parikh was, in fact, desperate to rekindle the company’s growth, which had slowed dramatically. To lure event attendees into mingling with Lacework salespeople at the store, the company handed out $300 Lululemon gift cards to each of them, at a total cost of more than $30,000, said a former Lacework employee involved in organizing the event.

Like many ploys attempted by Parikh and Lacework over the last several years, the event was for naught. According to someone present at the event, the majority of the people who showed up for it didn’t end up becoming customers of the company, whose main product is software that sits in customers’ cloud servers, flagging potential abnormalities that could be signs of a hack. Similarly lavish giveaways of goodies have also failed to yield results for Lacework.

Microsoft is absorbing GitHub into the company and putting it under the purview of Jay Parikh, one of the biggest failsons in valley history. He ran Lacework into the ground then cashed out and went to Meta. Real piece of crap asshole

RIP GitHub. Putting it under the AI umbrella is the surest way to kill it. It was the defacto default host for open source, now people will be much more hesitant to use it.

Your secure password is stored in the cloud and can be hacked or leaked.

Your workstation pin is only stored locally and you'd need a targeted attack to hack it.

I'd say the most important is to find a game that hooks you. I'm getting destroyed by DDP SDOJ even in easy mode but still love it. I got into bullet hells through DU3's aesthetics and never cleared it in normal. I like seeing Gun Frontier's setpieces though I credit feed it. Just have fun!

Cosmo Dreamer / Like Dreamers and Raging Blasters are "accidental 1cc" in easy mode, and they ramp up pretty nicely in higher difficulties so you can get better with practice. Graze Counter is not very hard either.

There was not only bad Xevious clones but also bad Gradius clones! And Twin Cobra.

You should try Raging Blasters, Crystal Breaker and Cosmo Dreamer / Like Dreamer. Very approachable in easy/normal and rank up pretty nicely in hard/very hard.

I haven't tried it yet but it's ported by M2 who have a flawless track record on Switch so far.

Dariusburst AC is also pretty good although you have to have a very wide screen to properly enjoy it. It also has incredible music that you should listen to whether you play it or not.

I can't answer this thread, so: bullet hells are not inherently harder than traditional shmups! They're a different style! You can breeze through some of them and 1cc your first try! Gradius is much harder than 90% of non-Cave bullet hells!

Which echoes OP's sentiment about kaizo, I guess.

I think that as an indie game dev without a large publisher, your target audience is not gamers in general, it is sickos.

It's hardcore sickos that will be diving the depths of your genre and finding your game, and it is sickos who will be spreading it.

Please the passionate, not the masses.

Like all french people around my generation, through Club Dorothée and similar shows in the 80s and 90s. Featuring lots of animes inappropriate for kids but heavily censored.

Most people are ok with fascism as long as they're not directly affected too much, especially if getting out of fascism means doing any sort of effort.

The game is not for everyone, old school shmup in the later Toaplan style, not very beginner/casual friendly.

Carina's soundtrack is really banging, though.

just a reminder again that we were told over and over that a 13 year old downloading a Limp Bizkit mp3 was an existential threat to society
