In 2018, Caswell County was added to my old House district as part of yet another redistricting. At the time I was struck by the fact that my home county of Orange was the most highly educated county in North Carolina, but Caswell was 91 out of 100. Instead of mounting a traditional campaign, I decided to try an approach where I could care for people on the ground, build community, and garner political support all at the same time.
My campaign set out to create a network of seventeen Little Free Libraries across Caswell County. To this day, they are still full of books for children and adults. There’s only one full size library in the county, but now people all over can find reading materials much closer to home - their apartment complexes, at corner stores, at volunteer fire departments, and more.
The project turned out to be a tremendous way to build community connections. Pulling it off required building a unique coalition of organizations and leaders, all of whom have deep ties across the entire community: the Caswell County Library, the Caswell Partnership for Young Children, the Caswell Sheriff’s Department, Caswell County Parks and Recreation Department, Caswell Local Foods, and multiple Volunteer Fire Departments. They all loved having a joint project. And they were even happier when we financed it with donations from my campaign and my friends Brian Haney and Chris Quinn built all of the libraries through the nonprofit Mighty Neighborly.
It was an amazing way for me to build a reputation as someone who brought the community together and delivered real results. That year it was basically my entire campaign. All that I asked in turn for running the project was that they introduce me to people and have me at the unveiling of each Little Free Library.

This today from NC State Senator @graigmeyer.bsky.social speaks directly to your point: "I decided to try an approach where I could care for people on the ground, build community, and garner political support all at the same time.... a network of 17 Little Free Libraries across Caswell County."

Sudan has become a 'case study' for the impact of USAID cuts, aid worker says Humanitarians in Sudan, where a three-year civil war has made assistance increasingly difficult, warn that a vacuum left by cuts to U.S. funding cannot be filled.

The British medical journal Lancet found that in the absence of USAID’s funds and works, 14 million more people would die in the next five years, a third of those children under 5.

The FAA
@FAANewsβ€’ 42m
β€’ β€’ .
Nearly 13, 000 air traffic controllers have been working without pay for weeks, ensuring the safety of more than 50,000 daily operations across the national airspace system (NAS).
As we head into this weekend, a surge in callouts is straining staffing levels at multiple facilities, leading to widespread impacts across the NAS. Currently, half of our Core 30 facilities are experiencing staffing shortages, and nearly 80 percent of air traffic controllers are absent at New York-area facilities.
After 31 days without pay, air traffic controllers are under immense stress and fatigue.
The shutdown must end so that these controllers receive the pay they've earned and travelers can avoid further disruptions and delays.
As we continue to reiterate, we will never compromise on safety. When staffing shortages occur, the FAA will reduce the flow of air traffic to maintain safety. This may result in delays or cancellations.

Some rare great abortion news in tonight’s newsletter:

- A federal court ruled that the FDA violated the law by imposing unnecessary restrictions on mifepristone

- The New York Supreme Court rejected Texas’ attempt to issue a judgement against an abortion provider here
