I'll end there. Except to say this: workers collective freedoms are essential to liberal democracy. The more governments erode these freedoms the less democratic our society is. So we have to ask ourselves this: when do we stop letting governments erode the very freedoms our democracy depends on?

As I am working on a talk and larger project on the importance of worker unions for the preservation of and deepening of democracy, it is worth putting into context how draconian the Alberta government's actions were yesterday with regard to the teachers' strike.

One of the things you learn quickly in studying democracy is that slides into authoritarianism always, ALWAYS, attack trade unions. And according to 2024 International Trade Union Confederation Global Rights Index, Canada is a Regular Violator of workers/trade union rights.
