Does anyone know of any articles focussed on the issue of public access to museum collections databases and AI? I’ve got some concerns as we work towards launching a public portal. OR if you work at a museum and some of your collection is available online, what are you doing about it? #museums

Museums and archives play such an important role, I’m hoping that this latest HBC news brings more awareness to this. Maybe it’ll also convince folks that appropriate funding for these institutions is crucial for their survival!

A new exhibit has just opened at the Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver.

It showcases the history and culture of the Nuxalk First Nation from Bella Coola, B.C.

A paperback novel with a shiny red cover sits on a beige couch. The title, Bad Cree, is written in big white letters. Underneath in smaller black font are some Cree syllabics and the words “a novel”. A thin black line like a wire runs the width of the book near the bottom and three black crows sit on it. The author’s name, Jessica Johns, is in yellow under the crows.

Read this on my flight home last night. An incredible page-turner but also filled with love and family connection. I highly recommend it if you’re on the hunt for a good read!

An exhibit case featuring Helen Housty’s belongings. Helen high-ranking Heiltsuk woman who married Nuxalk man Sam Schooner. A woven hat with painted form line artwork sits atop a mount that is nearly invisible, making the hat appear to be floating in the case. Next to it is a carved talking stick. To the left you can see the edge of a woven blanket.

Inside MOAs great hall, surrounded by incredible carved totem poles, a large group of people have gathered to listen to Clyde Tallio, co-curator of the new exhibition.

Two belongings from the HBC collection are part of the beautiful Nuxalk exhibition at MOA, and I was honoured to attend an incredible day of celebration for the opening. I love this part of my job.

Nothing says happy Valentine’s Day like a shingles diagnosis. Ouch.

Six beautiful birch bark bitings are laid out on a bright white light table to bring out the designs. The birchbark squares look orange and have intricate floral designs, all made by the artists teeth, that appear as brighter yellow when the light shines behind them.

Got things all set up for the Collections for Community access event on Sunday. I’m very excited to spend time with the birch bark bitings using this lovely light table. Registration is full, but we’ll offer another session again in the future!

Begging Winnipeggers to get snow tires and learn how to drive in winter. All of my possible routes to downtown were plagued with accidents and massive back ups.

Today’s run was a chilly one, with a windchill that makes it feel like -30, but invigorating! Stay warm fellow Winnipeggers!

2024 was a busy year at work, just did my final monthly tally and I responded to 188 public inquiries, 169 professional inquiries, gave 11 tours, and facilitated 37 collections visits for community members/artists/researchers. All this on top of my regular curatorial & collections mgmt duties.

Add chopped green onions, salt, and cracked pepper. No idea why, but my family has this as a side dish at both thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s delicious!
