The Kode website is terrible, as am I at both art and tech. However, whilst not being able to narrow down the picture, I'm fairly sure it was one by Johan Christian Dahl.

Very reminiscent of a landscape I saw in the Kode Gallery in Bergen, Norway. I have tried to find the painting, but their website is dreadfull.

I'm not sure, it was just some conjecture, but I can ask a hydrographer or two what they think - although one is Admiralty and the other Royal Navy, so probably get the official line either way.

I'm more of a sailor than an etymologist, but could it be that a strait describes a passage through restricted waters, and that e.g. that an east-west passage through the Dover strait would, in terms of navigation, course steered &tc, be different to west-east, hence the plural?

Ha, me too. Allowed an hour to change at Geneva, spent most of that parked in an outer suburb of Lyon. 12 minute change and now I’m on the pendolino to Milan. If I’d missed it I would’ve missed the sleeper to Syracuse tonight. Gulp.
