In this story, like every other — we hear about the government doing awful illegal things. The furthest the justice system will go, when it acts at all, is say “stop doing the illegal thing.”

No punishment. No consequences. That’s not a sustainable way for a country to exist.

once again pointing out that Trump vs. US is a treasonous decision--the Supreme Court equivalent of January 6--and the justices who voted for it have forfeited any claim to legitimacy (or indeed due process) whatsoever

The US media likes Trump and wants him to succeed, and hate Trump's opponents and want them to fail.

So you're saying ICE is incompatible with the rule of law as practiced in this nation from the founding?

Think I see a pretty easy solution here, champ.

Just noting that the Senate version of the joint resolution literally also says the DC tax bill was transmitted to the Hill on December 30 (not January 7) lol

The fact that (1) the enrolled bill text sent to the President literally says that the DC tax bill was transmitted to the Hill on Dec. 30; & (2) this action was mentioned in the Dec. 30 edition of the House’s Congressional Record makes it clear that DC simply ignore H.J. Res. 142

I think a fundamental divide in modern dem party politics is between people who want to change/influence candidates & people who want to change/influence the electorate. One of these tactics seems much fucking easier imo

Since Graham Platner discourse is on my timeline, I will add this: I think it sucks that Maine is deciding between Totenkopf guy and a 78 year-old who is pro-filibuster, while D.C. gets no senate representation at all. I think D.C. could elect two decent senators who never had Nazi tattoos.

Exclusive: Pentagon threatens to cut off Anthropic in AI safeguards dispute Anthropic has not agreed to the Pentagon's terms and defense officials are getting fed up after months of difficult negotiations.

It concerns me that one of the two issues in the DOD vs Anthropic fight is "use for domestic surveillance", with other articles being clear it's about use to track US citizens. Why is this a DOD requirement? @wyden.senate.gov

YES. A turn to state constitutions for substantive protections from federal authoritarianism is a necessary development under the present circumstances.

I've long seen federalism as on balance bad for rights—Jim Crow, after all, lasted nearly a century. But today, its potential can't be denied.

Here’s an article about how the administration continues to perform illegal actions against people despite court orders finding them illegal. I am arguing that the justice system needs to react to this new situation by promising and enforcing sanctions.

Calling the requirement for a judicial warrant before entering a person’s home one of the Democrats’ “new restrictions on federal immigration agents” crosses the line into outright falsehood. It’s in the Bill of Rights! A rule as old as the republic.

There is no way Senate Dems should vote for DHS funding while Republicans are threatening to nationalize elections and Trump is threatening to do it by executive order. ICE reforms are no longer enough. Their authoritarianism must be fought with every legislative lever available.

BREAKING: ICE director Todd LYONS says the two officers involved in the Jan. 14 chase/ shooting incident appear to have lied under oath and are being investigated by DOJ. This comes after DHS Secretary Kristi Noem defended them as firing in self-defense. politico.com/news/

Attributable to Todd Lyons:
Today, a joint review by ICE and the Department of Justice (DO) of video evidence has revealed that sworn testimony provided by two separate officers appears to have made untruthful statements.
Both officers have been immediately placed on administrative leave pending the completion of a thorough internal investigation.
Lying under oath is a serious federal offense. The U.S. Attorney's Office is actively investigating these false statements.
Upon conclusion of the investigation, the officers may face termination of employment, as well as potential criminal prosecution.
The men and women of ICE are entrusted with upholding the rule of law and are held to the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct. Violations of this sacred sworn oath will not be tolerated.
ICE remains fully committed to transparency, accountability, and the fair enforcement of our nation's immigration laws.

WOW. Incredible. This is the case in which DHS claimed that ICE officers had been attacked with a shovel and fired back in self-defense. Evidence since suggests an ICE officer fired through a closed door and struck someone on the other side.

Will DHS retract the prior claims?
