The people who loved Charlie Kirk loved him because he told them they were right to hate and fear a wide swath of their fellow citizens. The first amendment protects his right to do that, but it’s not what civil discourse in a modern democracy should look like.

The line of argument from governments and media right now is “Why are you upset? We’re not killing you, we’re just constantly telling massive groups of people that you’re dangerous, fuck children and should be killed.”

The assassination of Charlie Kirk makes we worry we can no longer have peaceful discussions of whether gays should be stoned to death or civil and collegial debates about whether black people are inherently inferior. Our culture will suffer.

One final thing. It's odd to see Ezra Klein, a total policy nerd, say Kirk did politics the right way when Kirk had almost no interest in either policy, or the empirical rigor necessary to get policy right. Kirk's approach to politics was 99% culture war rage stoking w/ almost no policy content.

At some point, the white community is going to have to do something about the high rates of crime in white neighborhoods.
