But the 50-50 split in American partisan allegiance that we've been living under for the last few decades is neither a constant nor an inevitability, and there's no reason to imagine that if our country is able to rebuild its democracy we'll necessarily see it continue on the other side.

One thing about the below—the GOP's plummeting ability to compete in free and fair elections is going to *absolutely* make autocracy more appealing to the party's base and leadership. Emerging Democratic advantages in traditional politics render our current situation more fraught, not less.

I was reliably told by very serious political pundits that the Trump realignment in Nov 2024 was deep and ever-lasting. Turns out that voters have paid attention to obscene overreach by ICE, the loss of jobs especially in manufacturing and the higher prices at the grocery store & beyond.

First, your pool of applicants shrinks dramatically.

Second, your pool of *qualified* applicants shrinks even more.

With the result that third, you wind up with an applicant pool that's enthusiastic about punching babies in the face and not much else.
