What we still get wrong about women’s role in global economics
From the Enlightenment to today’s ‘tradwives’, three books look at the tension between production and reproduction
‘When Adam Smith wrote “It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer or the baker that we expect our dinner but from their regard to their own interest,” he omitted any discussion of the unpaid work of his mother (& later his sister) that went into cooking his dinner.’ on.ft.com/4olyOut

James Watson, dead at 97, was a scientific legend and a pariah among his peers
James Watson, the co-discoverer of the structure of DNA who died Thursday at 97, was a scientific legend and a pariah among his peers.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.
Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."
Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

A slide from my presentations that I often use, showing dozens of faces and reading "To care about climate change you don't have to be a certain type of person, you just have to be human."
If we don’t fix the climate, pollution, and nature crises, we can’t fix anything. They are already actively amplifying poverty, hunger, and division. They are what stand between all of us, regardless of geography or ideology, and the better future we all seek. That's why I'm convinced that ...

Preregistration Isn’t the Chief Executive of Science, It’s a Small Part of the Quality Control Department
And I'm Beginnning to Think It Should Be Fired for Poor Performance
"I’m actually biased in favor of the intuitive value of preregistration; but things that seem intuitively sensible can turn out to be wrong anyway. Increasingly, I’m wondering if this is one of those things."

Power for the people
How municipal electricity firms outcompeted the private sector in Britain, 1890-1920.
Interesting addition to the growth debate from @arthurdowning.bsky.social who makes the case that publicly owned municipal electricity firms outcompeted the private sector between 1890-1920 and were able to raise private capital through municipal bonds
