It was great to join colleagues and partners today at @cityandstateny.bsky.social's Council Member Retreat.

I’m proud of what @council.nyc.gov has accomplished, from establishing new programs to protecting our communities. It’s important for the new class to build on the foundation we’ve laid.

Today, I sat down with Dan Mannarino to talk about how New York City Council has provided steady leadership and results for New Yorkers over the last four years, while advancing an agenda that supports historically overlooked communities.

While DYCD plays a pivotal role, their success is hampered by inadequate support from the mayoral administration.

Nearly half a million young New Yorkers benefit from DYCD’s diverse programs, and our city should strengthen the agency’s ability to serve them.

Today, New York City Council voted to:

✔️ Override mayoral vetoes to protect CityFHEPS households from rent increases, advance pay equity, and strengthen City contracting
💧 Strengthen water safety efforts
🏫 Require lifesaving health devices in schools and childcare facilities

Late contract payments by the City threaten the survival of nonprofit providers, putting the sector and New Yorkers at risk.

This bill builds on @council.nyc.gov's slate of reforms to address bureaucratic issues that cause chronically late payments.

Today, New York City Council overrode the mayor's vetoes of four bills that deliver for New Yorkers.

This Council has remained steadfast in protecting working people and putting their interests first, so everyone can lead lives with dignity, safety, and opportunity.

Trump’s cuts are already forcing nonprofits that deliver essential care and support to scale back services and lay off staff—putting organizations at risk of shutting down altogether.

Yesterday, we honored Detective First Grade Faisal Khan on his well-earned retirement.

For 28 years, he has served with integrity and played a vital role in establishing the NYPD Muslim Officers Society. Grateful for his leadership, dedication, and service to our city.

Trump’s ICE is tearing children away from their families.

More than 600 kids have been sent into federal detention this year, the highest number on record.

Access to doula care can be the difference between life and death, especially for Black and brown mothers. That’s why New York City Council fought to provide free doula services in underserved neighborhoods across NYC.

Now, Trump’s Medicaid cuts threaten to strip mothers of this essential care.

For years, the Showing Hearts Foundation has been critical in maximizing the potential of our youth through programs like the YouthPreneur Summit.

It was an honor to attend their inaugural gala and receive the Founders’ Guardian Award.

The Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, and the repeal of abortion rights across the country, has left the most vulnerable among us without care.

Improving maternal health will require our collective effort and investment from stakeholders across industries in our city and state.
