I heard this has to do with it being a great reference work for AV checks, especially surround systems.

I’m sympathetic to the point, but any price control inherently is a roundabout β€œsubsidy” at least in the sense it is being paid by those not benefiting from the price control and any potential tax revenues forwent from it. But in the sense that it is not a direct check or outlay from the coffers ok

Planning / policy / econ students, recent grads, others:
What types of skills would you have enjoyed learning in your program as it pertains to R, data viz, and GIS? I'm creating a course meant to survey major urban topics, and apply data science and GIS to those issues.

By gutting the BLS and trying to make it junks stats, is this some bold gamble of thinking they can control and win the economic vibes and anecdote war?

3) if in Mac or Linux system you can use something like this.

(Requires osmium and gdal/ogr installed on your system using command line).

Ex:
osmium tags-filter region.osm.pbf railway=rail,light_rail,subway,tram -o railways.osm.pbf

ogr2ogr -f "ESRI Shapefile" railways.shp railways.osm.pbf

2) you can use Qgis as an intermediary. Open the file you downloaded in qgis then export it as a shp to work with it in esri

03.08.2025 16:49 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

1) just use R and the osmdata package and download it directly. Then it’s simple to select the region you want and export to shp

Geofabrik Download Server

You can download the raw data here from OSM and it’s basically the same thing. You’ll then have an osm pbf file. You can then convert to shp in various ways.

Also unlike a crime, there’s no point for the β€œalleged” since there’s no due process waiting to be had and grave concerns, or worries of libel. It’s an amateur man cheating at a game of hitting a ball in a hole with a stick.

The problem is that we mess with the equilibrium of the standard urban model (Alonso-Muth-Mills) by mucking it up with restrictions that prohibit higher-value land being put to higher and better use.

This is why SF and LA have these tiny, dumpy houses that go for over a million. My friends, it is not the materials that are making these houses so expensive. In many cases, they're actually run down! Its location. Location. Location. And, hence, land costs.

16.07.2025 14:03 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

the biggest misconception in housing costs is that its (largely) driven by materials and constrction. Sure, on the margin that matteres. But in major metro areas, it is the LAND that is 60-80% of the value of the property. Lowering construction costs doesn't do anything to mitigate the land costs.

The thing about Sisyphus isn’t so much that he goes back down the hill. In fact if he goes over the hill he will go down in altitude again. The problem is he’s making no forward, or x-axis progress. The boulder rolls down, but more importantly, backward.

People will go 5 years declining a new cabin air filter thinking they can get it cheaper at Autozone, but then never actually do it and their car smells like an Uber with cheap air freshener.

My 20 year old niece back home in miami picked me up from the airport for her first time. I am old as I proceeded to talk about every other building and restaurant space and indicate what used to be there, and whether it was a good restaurant ; and how β€œall this” used to just be warehouses and grass

They also had, in many warmer weather areas, designed architecture to maximize cooling rather than designs that explicitly assume AC and thus make many choices that burn up the home if the AC is out.
