also i do think one thing that is always lost in this suggestion is the idea of editors??? editors are SO IMPORTANT and you especially realize that when you read the newsletters of writers you love and you're like, "huh something feels off." they are not being edited!

sooo many people told me to start a newsletter after my last staff journo job but it is not that easy and wouldn't pay my rent! i *loved* writing about television/culture but the only way to consistently pay my rent was to take a job in a different industry.

on top of that, even if you do start a newsletter, subscription fatigue means you'll compete for the same pool of attention & cash as netflix. the capital required to start a media organization means it's out of reach sans a wealthy patron. & they don't fund things counter to their class interests
