"For all our failings, despite our limitations and fallibilities, we humans are capable of greatness."
-Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space
In the 1995 book The Demon Haunted World, Carl Sagan warned that the US was turning its back on science, and that the consequences would be dire.
Near the start of their new book, Michael E. Mann and Peter J. Hotez argue that what the astronomer feared is now coming to pass.
Now on @sciam.bsky.social: NASAβs next-gen Habitable Worlds Observatory may be our best chance to find alien life. But can a nation busy ripping itself apart unite to launch a mission to solve lifeβs cosmic mysteries? By @nadiadrake.bsky.social (and me).

He was wonderful. So smart and so kind. Missing him here, too.

βIn the last few millennia we have made astonishing and unexpected discoveries about the Cosmos and our place within it, explorations that are exhilarating to consider. They remind us that humans have evolved to wonder, that understanding is a joy, that knowledge is prerequisite to survival.β
