Ooh the vanishings and slow-burn eeriness in this story are so good

This was my (late 70s) experience too -- kids a few years older than me were scary/mean as hell, kids a few years younger were totally chill, my own cohort was a mix. The way kids were raised changed RADICALLY from about 1975 to 1990, I think it's really underrated as a social shift of that era.

Very true! Also, Cyndi Lauper has a lot of soul.

I rewatched it this week too and same! Also felt on the second watch I appreciated more what a great character Delta Slim is. It's just an incredible movie overall.

When telling Americans about the year of (legally mandated, in no way contingent on any supervisor's whim) parental leave I received in Germany, one of the most common responses I got was along the lines of "wow, that was so awesome of your boss to give you that! What an inspiring, amazing boss!"

We’re all being punished because a bunch of unattractive billionaires are mad they can only buy the faux respect of sycophants, and not real cultural influence.

Even though there was a moral panic about jazz in the 1920s that was VERY MUCH like the 80s/09s moral panics about rap and heavy metal! I mean, the whole reason US kids had to learn square dancing in school gym class for decades was as counter programming to the "harmful" influence of jazz.

This reminds me of a study I read about that found what people who hid Jews from the Nazis in WWII had in common, across diff't countries, was that most were people whose neighbors found them disagreeable & mildly unpleasant. Moral courage seems to negatively correlate with likeability.
