31 of England’s prisons are Victorian. Do they work? – visual investigation More than 30 jails still in use today were built by the Victorians. They house a quarter of the prison population. Here we explore how 19th century design is contributing to a 21st century crisis

A really interesting (and humanising) article about the prison estate and the impact of physical environment on prisoners www.theguardian.com/society/ng-i...

A five by five grid drawn on a pad, like a classic bingo card.
Top row: gym equipment, taxidermy, sofa bed, attic, large collection of jigsaws
Second row: too much crafting stuff, bookcase of 70s/80s classics, electronic drum kit, black & decker workmate, folded towels
Middle row: lounge sleeping, bed next to fridge, *DUVET*, caravan, old cuddly toy
Fourth row: 80s tv/film-related bed linen, garage sleeping, adult in child bed, scary dolls, bed under desk
Bottom row: sleeping bag, brass instrument, own house but not own bed, inappropriate electrical points, Proper Cancellation Stuff...

Court delays β€˜driving innocent prisoners to plead guilty’ in England and Wales Exclusive: Some inmates being advised to change plea to secure earlier release as backlog spirals, watchdogs say

An inaccurate subheading - the article actually says defendants are being given advice about likely sentence and deciding to plead guilty, not that their lawyers are advising them to plead guilty, a crucial difference www.theguardian.com/law/2024/dec...
