Decorated in “Marine Style” with a wide-eyed octopus among rocks. From Knossos Little Palace, 1450-1370 BC Bottom R - krater with rounded body narrowing at the bottom towards the foot. Wide flaring mouth and rim with black painted wavy decoration, and two sturdy handles attached on each side between the top of the mouth and shoulders of the vessel. Decorated with a central very stylised wide-eyed octopus whose tentacles loop up and down around the body of the pot, 1370-1300 BC

The journey was not only a personal triumph but also a significant moment for women in journalism, as it highlighted the capabilities of women at a time when they were rarely given such opportunities. She later chronicled her experience in her book, Around the World in Seventy-Two Days. /end

Nellie Bly's trip around the world was turned into a board game, with a square for each day of her journey.

Bly traveled through England, France, Italy, the Suez Canal, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan. She returned to New Jersey on Jan. 25, 1890, beating her goal by a week. Her achievement made her an international celebrity and a symbol of female independence and capability. /4

Bly departed Hoboken, N.J., on a steamship. She primarily traveled by steamship and train, but also used rickshaws, horses, donkeys, and other smaller-scale and local transport. She faced challenges such as missed connections, storms and delays, but her determination never wavered. /3

Bly’s editor at the New York World hesitated to sponsor the trip, arguing that a woman was physically incapable and would be too burdened by luggage. The intrepid Bly proved him wrong by taking one dress, a sturdy overcoat and one 16” x 7” satchel that contained everything else she needed. /2

Today in history, 1889: Journalist Nellie Bly sets off on a trip around the world alone, attempting to beat the “record” set in Jules Verne’s fictional book, “Around the World in 80 Days.” She ultimately completed the journey in just 72 days, six hours and 11 minutes. /1
