Tech billionaires seem to be doom prepping. Should we be worried?
The debate is ramping up about what happens if - or when - computer intelligence overtakes humans

"I once met a former bodyguard of one billionaire with his own "bunker", who told me his security team's first priority, if this really did happen, would be to eliminate said boss and get in the bunker themselves. And he didn't seem to be joking."

There's a really long joke that ends up with (a version of) that jingle as the punchline.

I think building big walls is the most palatable part of climate change for some people. Forget about mitigation, but getting the bulldozers out is something even the most parochial politician can get behind.

The only way that DCs won't raise emissions is if they manage to use only renewable energy that wouldn't otherwise be used. Which isn't great in a country already in trouble because of almost certainly missed climate targets.

Emissions are a quantifiable thing, and there's pretty good data on how they change and how we're tracking towards targets. It should be very easy for journalists who are experienced in asking politicians tricky questions about money numbers to transfer this scrutiny over to GHG numbers.

It would be like, because FG make the most of their fiscal responsibility "brand", not bothering to ask any other party about how they plan to pay for their program on the grounds that this is FG's "special thing".

I can't decide whether it's amazing that someone with her experience thinks that, or whether it's entirely on-brand that someone with her experience thinks that.
I'm tending towards the latter....

Jesus, just read that. Humphreys still in the circa 2003 "green bin" view of the climate crisis.

It comes from the worldview that politics is all about personalities (and associated shenanigans and gossip). So if there are no Greens in government, climate isn't as important anymore, right?
14.10.2025 11:12 โ ๐ 16 ๐ 3 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0
I think the same applies to SF as well. This is largely a media failing IMO - "green stuff" is mostly the concern of parties with "Green" in the name and it just doesn't apply to the others.
14.10.2025 10:57 โ ๐ 15 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 3 ๐ 0
It's funny how even a Green Party person seems to be operating under the idea that lack of environmental action is just "priced in" to everybody in FG/FF and therefore you don't ever need to ask them about it.

When (British) English speakers leave the "r" out of "shorn", they don't just omit it - they lengthen the o sound as well. So it ends up sounding like "Shaun". It's the same with "car". They don't just say "ka". It's more like kaa (with the long 'a' sound).

The missing comma in "wake up beautiful" makes it sound even more creepily demanding.

Haha, I did similar. But giving a child a name where there's a common, obvious, pronunciation, but insisting that it's said the much more obscure way is a bit more of a stretch....

I felt there was very little "calling out" of climate delay from coalition partners by Ryan etc during the last govt.

The approach that he seems to favour (trying to find common ground with FFFG) was demonstrably unsuccessful anyway as those parties, in government with Greens *and* current govt, have shown zero appetite for selling emissions reductions to their supporters.

Speakers of Irish English, and most American English speakers, pronounce the "r"s in words like "shorn" whereas most British English accents don't.
