Strong offering today in the Surrey Heartlands. Going to be an excellent autumn by all accounts, but, still, splendid stuff.

You can hold the latter opinion whilst still being able to see that, presentationally, this is similar to many things you do not like to see done by others. E.g. the presentation of immigration figures.

And acknowledging that does not have to detract from your cause. I'd hope.

How does this compare to this time last year? Numbers look similar on your graph. Seasonally so. Where are flu numbers at?

The scale of the Y access is incredibly (deliberately?) misleading.

Supportive of vaccine & booster access but this feels pretty shoddy.

Michael Rosen’s guide to having a happier day: listen to music, get a good night’s sleep ... and add raisins to ice-cream Philip Larkin wrote that β€˜days are where we live’. Even in the bleakest of times, there are things you can do to improve yours. Former children’s laureate Rosen has some suggestions …

It's the perfect time of year to wonder why a formation of flying geese isn't called a Vagaggle.

More on this breaking new story as we get it.

Young wicketkeepers. I know you all hang out here.

Please ignore the under-informed Dhruv Jurel chat.

Pope only nicked that because he was standing up. In a game where everyone is flat, the 'keeper has an underappreciated way of changing the angles & irritating all but the very best.

Stand up.

Surrey vs Durham (1091 across 7?) has me wondering what the most runs in a game by Centurions is? 821 across 3 in BCL's 501 game for context...

The boy who came back: the near-death, and changed life, of my son Max It was, we were told, a case of sudden infant death syndrome interrupted. What followed would transform my understanding of parenting, disability and the breadth of what makes a meaningful life

I wrote for the Guardian’s Saturday magazine about my son Max, who changed how I see the world. Took ages. More jokes after the first bit.

Thanks Merope Mills for being the most patient and generous editor.

a statue of a hippopotamus with its mouth open and teeth showing . Alt: A hippo being tossed a watermelon, which it crushes in its massive jaws.

I have been doing entirely too much earnest posting about deep things recently, I need to do a proper thread about hippo testicles or something just to keep myself sane.

Oh by the way hippos have migratory testicles.

Morning. Happy New Year.
A while ago I ran a series of daily tweets about birdsong. The idea was to encourage people to pay attention to the natural sounds around them, and learn to identify birds from their sounds alone (which, after all, is often the only clue you get to their presence).

This Christmas, spare a thought for the world’s richest man For disruptors like Elon Musk, the statement of intent is all. What happens next – such as running a new US government department – is distressingly boring.
