This is an utterly appalling statement for a government representative in a democratic republic to make. It’s the sort of stuff you’d expect from a dictatorship. “Regrettable” - I can’t think of a more apt word than “evil” to describe that statement.

It is deeply unfair that Jews cannot express fear or grief without it being weaponised for repressive political ends, both by other Jews and by gentile politicians and media figures.
