I think the key question is, given that we could have much safer cars now technically (safety design , insurance regs and speed limiters for example) how does the regulatory state of autonomous commercial services make it easier or harder to implement?

I'm optimistic about the airline model too. independent drivers and contractors for Uber have squirmed out of real safety pricing for decades. it may be easier to hold large corporations to account

I'm terrified that they will drift from "good" when they actually need to be profitable and there is no good regulatory framework to make the operators balance public safety against cost cutting.

I believe it's more than possible to make such a regulatory regime but where is it?
