They are subsidising green hydrogen - there's about 1GW of green hydrogen in the two hydrogen allocation rounds so far.

It's only 350 MW - a tiny fraction of the UK's demand. It's worth it to test out different solutions and potentially pave the way for longer term solutions like green H2.

There seems to be a baffling inability for left-wing commenters in the US (and to an extent in the UK) to look at countries which they would say are more left-wing and ask "Does this problem also exist there and thus is unlikely to be due to whatever left-wing bugbear I'm seeking to blame for it?"

The EU (and other nations like China) need to focus on what they want their trade policy to achieve, which IMO should be decarbonisation. They should be continuing with things like the CBAM which will anyway penalise US high-carbon products if the US continues down the road it's on.

Deep frying in batter keeps even more of the nutrients locked in!

Chemist here - it's actually because more of the nutrients dissolve in water than in oil and also that water finds it much easier getting in and out of the veggies with the nutrients than oil does (this is also why things go crispy on the outside when deep fried rather than go soft)

The Path to Net Zero Solving climate change through decarbonisation is a generational challenge that many people worry we can’t achieve. I think we can, and this is how we’re going to do it. So many people …

I think the way to look at this is to split it up into low carbon things which are definitely now or will be soon cheaper than fossil fueled alternatives, and things which might not be for a long time if ever, so you can start to see where compromises need to be made. I tried to do that here:

Good thread on poor net zero sceptic article in the Economist (and generally relevant to most critiques of current UK strategy):

(fitted kitchens, furniture etc) and from a waste to energy plant. There is one of the two blue H2 production plants (350 MW) and a 1 GW gas CCS power plant. IMO this latter lines up with the low CCS route in the 2030 clean energy plan. (2/2)

HyNet expansion: project negotiation list

The government just announced the priority list for the first bunch of CCS projects in Hynet (north west England) which hopefully should assuage some of the worst doubts about what the CCS stuff is about. On the list is CCS from a cement works, from a domestic wood waste facility (1/2)

I have been wondering about this issue for the UK and the slightly counter-intuitive (in my mind) conclusion of this work is it's cheaper to transport the CO2 than the H2 or electricity. Maybe it would be different in the UK though.

I was told this after my mum's car got nicked - I asked how anyone could drive a stolen car anywhere with all the ANPR cameras and they said that they're not allowed to check the database unless the driver is committing another offence.

It's even worse if you do one of the other fantasy games where you get points for tackles, shots etc. because you'll also be getting angry at your player for fouling someone or being offside.

Seems like a no brainer for me. Even access to the Lime hire e-bikes has transformed how we get around - including my other half who literally never cycled since she was a kid but will now happily go to the shops or to pick the kids up on a Lime.

It's just are you playing Eddie Murphy or Judge Reinhold in Beverly Hills Cop - everyone understands the + and - of those two characters but the game needs to cope with if you're Judge and decide that this one time you're going to ignore your boss and bust in and kill everyone.

Need to hear from these two: "He describes meeting two elderly ladies in their 70s who did not even have a tent but managed the walk, sleeping outdoors every night."

Ultimately it only matters at the margins - existing solutions are good enough to decarbonise most of transport, SSBs aren't needed for grid storage, maybe you get a few more electric lorries with SSBs rather than H2/e-fuels. SSBs will make a better product for the consumer but they're not vital.

Yeah, solid state is going to happen quite soon but it's going to be a premium product where you need high energy density. Even sodium or redox flow batteries are going to be fine for grid applications in terms of energy density.

I think this issue is a great example of how UK politics is badly affected by sharing a language with the US, whose politics have limited relevance to our own. There is a very limited number of issues where policy in other countries is referred to and id cards is definitely not one of them!

The original ghostbusters got a meh from my kids which is the level below Monty Python but above most of the other old comedies I've shown them. Also we had to um-yeah-anyway over a couple of bits which wouldn't get into movies now.

It's perfect because before I even got the joke I was already doing the same face I do whenever I have to open the compost bin.

Yeah the nuclear lobby has deep pockets somehow. The reason I mentioned unions was because despite the narrative on here about how this government is incredibly right wing, the answer to why they do stuff is quite often "this particular union likes it".

Nuclear energy

It's the unions. Especially Prospect but also GMB and others are all massively in favour of nuclear.

Councils should definitely start acting to enable and encourage Lime bikes as a public utility rather than just tolerating them.

You get the same thing with cycling. People who live in areas where they have to go on 50 mph roads to get anywhere are like "It must be so scary cycling in London".

I don't know how it works with those things. I always assumed they sounded out the players before they start leaking to the press that they're buying them.

Oh yeah totally, it's just that Son comes across as such a nice and humble guy that I could believe that he did get offers and just said no. I'd love to hear the story from him at some point.

Definitely some unconscious bias going on but surely if he'd wanted a move he could've found an agent who could push harder for one.

I meant the article linked in the post quote tweeted by the post you quote tweeted. I appreciate now I've typed that out it probably wasn't that obvious.

In a UK context I think anyone who says deliverism is dead wasn't serious about saying 14 years of Tory govt had broken the UK just 1 year ago.

Is there any possibility either us or America can change languages to make it much harder for people to share American takes which make very little sense in a British context?
