Thanks Scifi Reader! Part of my inspiration came from reading Diana Wynne Jones' character Sophie in Howls' Moving Castle and realizing that older ladies never get to have adventures. I wanted Bell to have one! And why not a robot, in a post-organic civilization, with a bit of a twist at the end? :)
