They want the "next Hunger Games" aka a book that defines a whole period or even a whole genre, without being willing to risk to find it, and expecting it to just magically appear into well defined and well marketable boxes.

And to be clear, there’s nothing wrong with romantasy, or enjoying romantasy, or writing romantasy, or publishing romantasy. What’s wrong is publishing supporting *exclusively* romantasy, and chasing adult readers in the YA space.

I’ve talked in a couple places about the lesson of DC/Marvel tailoring their comics to straight white men in their 20s-30s and alienating the rest of the market. To see publishing speedrunning that with romantasy… it’d be funny if it wasn’t my livelihood.
