Hm, another interpretation, though - 20 years ago, there was a lot less "women uplifting women".

I found it pretty brutal in male-dominated spaces (tech, etc) where a successful woman or two would push others out.

I was lucky to get next-to-no sexism, but the bullying from women was a real shock.

Perhaps you could also consider that a not insignificant portion of the 'gamer' community are assholes who respond to any announcement with negativity, complaining and bitterness, which frankly makes it harder for devs and makes them much less likely to want to engage.
