Not quite sure why the media is presenting the Caerphilly result as a disaster for Labour, rather than as a perfect execution of its electoral strategy.

The bleakly funny thing about this story is that visibly *this morning* the Conservative leadership had not absorbed just how crackers the policy they had signed up to was.

Incredibly strange thing to say given that Lam's boss, Chris Philp, is sponsoring the bill with precisely these policies in it bills.parliament.uk/bills/3970

But, as the report makes clear, it wasn't simply an invention of Lam's. And even if the Tories now row back on it, much permanent damage has already been done by them (and Reform) even raising the possibility of deporting people by retrospectively changing immigration rules.
