Apparently, according to TfL, this qualifies as acceptable cycle โ€œinfrastructureโ€ in 2025

RIP some of the few wands TfL did reinstall on Clapham High Street.

Whilst locking my bike up, I saw:
1. Motorcyclist riding the entire length of the cycle lane
2. A car driver cut into the lane here to go around another driver waiting to turn right
3. A bus straddle the lane

A bit disappointing that there are not more separated cycle tracks on the main roads (like High Holborn and the Kingsway) though ๐Ÿ˜

It's about choice and enabling people to cycle and walk if they can and want. Just because some people have built life around the convenience of a car does not mean nobody else shouldn't have the options.
Also, cycling is often just as quick as driving in urban areas where most people live.

Similarly, pointing out how nobody walks on busy roads with no footway helps bat down the often-heard "nobody cycles here so a cycle lane is pointless" trope

My approach to these kind of discussions analogy: "Not everybody can walk โ€“ are you against pavements and pedestrian crossings? Shall we rip out pavements if people aren't walking on them 100% of the time?"

So far, nobody has ever been able to counter it and it seems to make people go quiet.

Top shows a wide street filled with cars, driving in multiple lanes. People walk along narrow sidewalks, and a few cyclists ride cautiously among the traffic.

Bottom: The same view today shows a cycle only route including a parent riding with a child in a cargo bike.

Haarlemmerstraat, Amsterdam in 1971 and today, now a cycling and walking only route

Thames water also did not replace the bollards on C7 on Upper Tooting Road after they finished there earlier this year. They donโ€™t care, and neither do TfL given they still havenโ€™t been replaced despite multiple reports.

Antwerp is an Effortlessly Cool City Toured Best by Bicycle Itโ€™s no wonder Antwerp now ranks among the top ten most bicycle-friendly cities in the world, according to the Copenhagenize Index.

โ€œThe city isnโ€™t quite at Copenhagen or Amsterdam levels, but itโ€™s closing in. Over 40 percent of locals commute by bike โ€” about ten times the rate of a typical North American city โ€” and you feel it immediately.โ€ Via @momentummag.bsky.social

Antwerp has come a long way since I worked there in 2019.

A human on a bicycle is nature's most efficient traveller.

A version of this graph went on to inspire Steve Jobs of Apple, who used it in a 1980 presentation describing the personal computer as "the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds."

Massive thanks to @wandsworthcycling.bsky.social for showing me the problem of traffic cutting across Upper Tooting Rd from side street to side street, barging in front of people crossing the road and bullying people riding bikes along CS7 out of the way.

My heart was in my mouth ๐Ÿซฃ

Great quote from Cllr Sullivan:

`Cllr Sullivan put to Cllr Mitchell that while he claimed not to be against cycleways in principle, โ€œI would challenge you to tell me where in practice youโ€™re in favour of cycle lanes, because so far I havenโ€™t heard any of thatโ€.`

@psimonk.bsky.social Just wondering if there has been any discussion between LCC and TfL/Will Norman about this? The blue paint over the junctions is still missing, too!

In the aftermath of tube strike chaos, 28% of Londoners say they are now more likely to cycle in future Bike hire firms admit spike in cycle traffic "exceeded expectations", as campaigners urge politicians to deliver on cycling's "huge untapped potential as a safe, healthy transport mode"

More than a quarter of Londoners say they are now more likely to cycle following the recent Tube strike disruption

When do towns and cities acknowledge that they won't win the hearts and minds of car drivers.

If you drive a car you'll go out of town. Fine, fuck em.

Counter program.

Don't compete, differentiate. No cars in town centres. Streets for people, socialising and culture and nice stuff

Overheard in the office today: โ€œI think Iโ€™ll start cycling in instead of getting the tube, itโ€™s only 25mins and will save me moneyโ€ ๐Ÿ‘€

Looks like some people are keen to switch after the tube strike!

Itโ€™s like when property developers donโ€™t include all the cars in their renders/graphics which will obviously be there clogging up the final product.

Itโ€™s tacit admission that more cars are not popular or wanted.

I have created a guide to help you or others obtain CCTV footage from TfLโ€™s #London Buses through a Subject Access Request. You will need to identify which company operates the route, as each company has its own process and retention period (usually 10โ€“14 days).
