All about active travel, reducing road danger and eliminating car-centrism and dependency ๐ฒ๐ถ๐ (Yes, I do drive)

12.11.2025 01:24 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0RIP some of the few wands TfL did reinstall on Clapham High Street.
Whilst locking my bike up, I saw:
1. Motorcyclist riding the entire length of the cycle lane
2. A car driver cut into the lane here to go around another driver waiting to turn right
3. A bus straddle the lane
A bit disappointing that there are not more separated cycle tracks on the main roads (like High Holborn and the Kingsway) though ๐
08.11.2025 01:06 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0It's about choice and enabling people to cycle and walk if they can and want. Just because some people have built life around the convenience of a car does not mean nobody else shouldn't have the options.
Also, cycling is often just as quick as driving in urban areas where most people live.
Similarly, pointing out how nobody walks on busy roads with no footway helps bat down the often-heard "nobody cycles here so a cycle lane is pointless" trope
08.11.2025 00:15 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0My approach to these kind of discussions analogy: "Not everybody can walk โ are you against pavements and pedestrian crossings? Shall we rip out pavements if people aren't walking on them 100% of the time?"
So far, nobody has ever been able to counter it and it seems to make people go quiet.
Top shows a wide street filled with cars, driving in multiple lanes. People walk along narrow sidewalks, and a few cyclists ride cautiously among the traffic. Bottom: The same view today shows a cycle only route including a parent riding with a child in a cargo bike.
Haarlemmerstraat, Amsterdam in 1971 and today, now a cycling and walking only route
04.11.2025 18:30 โ ๐ 45 ๐ 8 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 1Thames water also did not replace the bollards on C7 on Upper Tooting Road after they finished there earlier this year. They donโt care, and neither do TfL given they still havenโt been replaced despite multiple reports.

Antwerp has come a long way since I worked there in 2019.
In 2024/5 @mayoroflondon.bsky.social's TfL/borough partnerships delivered:
๐ฒ51km new bike routes
๐ฆ400 new ped crossings
๐ฒ12000 bike parking spaces
๐ฒ65000+ cycle training sessions
๐ธ150 new school streets
๐7 new LTNs

A human on a bicycle is nature's most efficient traveller.
A version of this graph went on to inspire Steve Jobs of Apple, who used it in a 1980 presentation describing the personal computer as "the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds."
I was going to email TfL but thought Iโd ask first!
17.10.2025 18:55 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Massive thanks to @wandsworthcycling.bsky.social for showing me the problem of traffic cutting across Upper Tooting Rd from side street to side street, barging in front of people crossing the road and bullying people riding bikes along CS7 out of the way.
My heart was in my mouth ๐ซฃ
Great quote from Cllr Sullivan:
`Cllr Sullivan put to Cllr Mitchell that while he claimed not to be against cycleways in principle, โI would challenge you to tell me where in practice youโre in favour of cycle lanes, because so far I havenโt heard any of thatโ.`
@psimonk.bsky.social Just wondering if there has been any discussion between LCC and TfL/Will Norman about this? The blue paint over the junctions is still missing, too!

More than a quarter of Londoners say they are now more likely to cycle following the recent Tube strike disruption

When do towns and cities acknowledge that they won't win the hearts and minds of car drivers.
If you drive a car you'll go out of town. Fine, fuck em.
Counter program.
Don't compete, differentiate. No cars in town centres. Streets for people, socialising and culture and nice stuff
Overheard in the office today: โI think Iโll start cycling in instead of getting the tube, itโs only 25mins and will save me moneyโ ๐
Looks like some people are keen to switch after the tube strike!
The motorist, who had nine previous road traffic convictions before fatally striking dad-of-two Euan Thomson as he cycled to work, was also banned from driving for 11 years

Contact information for bus operating companies contracted by Transport for London for subject access requests, including CCTV footage, under UK GDPR. The image provides details for Arriva London, First Bus, GoAhead London, Metroline, Stagecoach, Transport UK, Uno Bus, and Transport for London, including their opening hours, CCTV retention periods, and privacy policies. It also explains how to find which company operates a London bus route and includes disclaimers about logo use and copyright. The resource was created in September 2025 by @CLondoner92.
I have created a guide to help you or others obtain CCTV footage from TfLโs #London Buses through a Subject Access Request. You will need to identify which company operates the route, as each company has its own process and retention period (usually 10โ14 days).
