From βGiving Thanksβ by Philip Plyming: I think the risk of our hearts becoming stubborn is when we are locked into an outlook that says we do not have enough and that we need more. Western materialism has been successfully exported across the world, and every human being is now classified as a consumer, whether we are in America, India or China. Apart from this being a miserable way of describing human beings, it also means that we are bombarded with messages telling us that we don't have enough. We are programmed not to be satisfied. I get messages from my mobile provider telling me how much better my broadband could be. I need a phone which is newer, better, faster, smaller. I remember talking to someone in a rich corner of the Home Counties. They lived in a house worth well over a million pounds and had an index-linked pension that allowed them to take cruises and enjoy other luxuries. But they were comparing themselves to some of the bigger houses and cars that they saw on their trips out. And I've always remembered the punchline they gave: "Talk about how the other half live.' The other half! This person was in the richest 10%, probably 5%, in the country, but they were focusing on what they didn't have rather than what they did. Their heart couldn't see it another way. As long as our hearts are stubborn and we are focusing on what we don't have, rather than what we do, we will struggle to be thankful.
Have been reading βGiving Thanksβ by Philip Plyming. I donβt give thanks enough; it might help my anxiety disorder to focus more on thankfulness, or so I hope.
This is an interesting passage. Human restlessness has a positive, striving side as well as an acquisitive negative one I think, donβt you?
