Both Razbuten and a LOT of the comments talk about how it "isn't entertaining" and that people wanna come home and relax.
But we shouldn't reduce games as a medium to "entertainment".If the experience and the story I want to tell has a time limit, then I should be able to represent that mechanically.

A Youtube comment that reads:
"I kept waiting for you to address how a 20+ hour game could handle the fail state of running out of time and you just... didn't? This is the core challenge that a game-wide time limit needs to address. What happens when you're locked in a fail state in Cyberpunk after 30 hours because you're out of time and have already done all your quick side quests? Or 60 hours into BG3? Do you really expect players to just restart the game?"

While I agree that @razbuten.bsky.social should have adressed this point, my answer to the question "but what happens if you fail after 30 game hours???"

Then you fail. That's it. No way to come back, even though you had options. You failed, and the only way to get another ending is restarting.

Youtube comment that reads:
"One of my favorite things to do in Cyberpunk is blazing through the streets on my yaiba kusanagi motorcycle, if there was a real-time timer ticking down throughout the entire playthrough I would absolutely never do this and would exclusively use the fast travel stations. Rather than laughing when I mess up and slam into something at 100 mph I would be frustrated at the idea that I just lost some time due to having fun."

"but if there's a timer counting down, how am I going to have fun?!?!?!"

The whole point is that you can find how to have fun despite of it. There's overall more stress, but stress doesn't mean you can't have fun(more on that later)

Also fast travel should absolutely bring the timer down lol

Other point that people brought up is that "timers are stressful".

Stress is used in every other part of game design in order to make the player make interesting decisions.

People always reacted like this to every "gamewide" design, like losing resources on death on DkS, so that's nothing new

"I think the response of most players to a mechanic like that would probably be to OCD minmax and compulsively google before doing anything, which is probably the opposite effect to what you're looking for with them."

An youtube comment that reads: "I think the response of most players to a mechanic like that would probably be to OCD minmax and compulsively google before doing anything, which is probably the opposite effect to what you're looking for with them."

This is the most upvoted comment on the video, saying that people would "compulsively google before doing anything".

And like, ok? Who cares? If the person goes to google and spoil themselves the fun of the game just because of a mechanic that is a setback, they were going to do it anyway.

The video talks about using time limits not only as a tool for game sections and mini-games, but for the whole game, being intrinsically linked to the narrative.

And that's great, because I'm always thinking in ways we could improve the medium, but people treat this like such a taboo

YouTube video by Razbuten Time Limits Are Good (but nobody wants them)

I recently watched Razbuten's video on time limits and honestly, the comments are so sad to see.

This is the video I am talking about:

Let's take a look at the reasons why you might get laid off while working on a game, shall we?

Your game doesn't do well, which, sure. Harsh, but understandable.
Your game is called a success by Microsoft. Microsoft then lays you off.
You help make a game as successful as Marvel Rivals. You are then laid off.
Your studio gets acquired for over $60 billion dollars. You are then laid off.
You endure executive pressure that forces you into making games your studio isn't good at making. It doesn't go well. You are then laid off.
Someone decides your portfolio needs to be aligned/reorganised/restructured to become more flexible/agile/versatile under economic/industry conditions. Meanwhile, your CEO might've spent $2 million on vintage cars. You are then laid off.

don't be embarrassed!! you have a lot of courage to put your art out there, and some of the greatest games we have today started with non professional art.

starting the day with this:
bad game art will *ALWAYS* be better than ai illustrations.
i want to play games that people actually took the time and courage to put a pencil to paper or make bad pixel art instead of just slop. no matter how advanced ai generation gets, this will never change.

Alpha to me is basically: no stylized UI, really basic game assets, just enough so that you can test the game loop fully. it's a well-developed proof of concept, really

Alpha: first playable prototype
Beta: vertical slice
Gold: fully released game
