I'd trust commercial N95s for about 10 years after manufacturing, but probably not 50 years, as long as they are dry.

Different manufacturers had different levels of overperformance after 6 to 10 years, with the 3M 8210s holding up at a 97+% performance level under serious testing after 7 years.

Vicusi et al. 2009 did a study on 6 to 10-year old N95s held in warehouse conditions (heated but not humidity controlled) in 2007, and 19 of 21 tested models were still performing better than the N95 standard, while 2 were marginal (passed the KN94 standard).

The N95s are overdesigned to allow for electret degradation over the posted lifespan of the mask in many different conditions, so there is quite a bit of wiggle room in normal conditions. This varies by manufacturer.

N95 masks generally fail by embrittlement of the rubber on their straps. As long as they are kept dry, the electrostatic charge on the electret polypropylene fibers in the filter paper will retain their charge.

I don’t want to believe what I‘m seeing; this is exactly the national shame we grew up with as german descendants from Nazi-Deutschland. Their boss's boss's boss's boss is looking for excuses to escalate, send in the troops, and declare martial law before democracy settles over them in 2026 and they lose the ability to make the US into an autocracy for good.

The citizen supporters here were exceptionally disciplined in their nonviolence. I kept thinking "I might have ended up getting manhandled myself if I were in that mess."

That's what I was thinking after I watched it the third time. These guys are at risk in this situation, and they know it, and they bailed after they realized that they were too exposed here.

Yeah, these guys would have been ripped apart if any of the concerned people in that shot were not absolutely committed to non-violent protest.

A few times even a pair of wire cutters to snip the zip-tie would have lengthened this attempted abduction.

That makes sense. Privatize the abduction function, the incarceration function, then eventually the judicial and policing functions.
