I like to run, read (okay, mostly listen), play video games, and spend time with my wife and daughter. I enjoy learning about science and philosophy. I am a software engineer.

03.10.2025 17:18 β π 10118 π 1648 π¬ 104 π 78I feel like you are suggesting that people who think public schools should be well-funded and good are obligated to subject their own kids to a bad school if that is the one available to them. Which doesn't seem fair or realistic to me.
01.10.2025 13:31 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0"klein has somehow got it into his head that the way to do politics "like" charlie kirk is to start by accepting that charlie kirk was right on the substance"
I just don't think this is true. Klein clearly doesn't think Kirk is right on substance and doesn't say that he thinks that.
Really? I just finished listening to this and I did not hear it this way. Klein had Coates on in the context of Coates writing a piece critical of Klein. And I mostly heard Klein making a case for his (widely criticized) approach, not "demanding" things for Coates.
28.09.2025 19:26 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I can't really get behind this sorta post cos on some level... yeah, I'll do that. It's easy for me to see the worth and value of people who respect me, and hard for me to see it in those who hate or oppress me: but I'm committed to doing it all the same. So yeah, I'll work harder for those cases. π€·π½
24.09.2025 21:35 β π 95 π 7 π¬ 5 π 1Yes that's fair. You weren't making a statement about free speech in general. I see that now.
20.09.2025 17:22 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I largely agree, but I still think free speech is an important concept. Popular backlash is not the same as government coercion. We're not all going to agree on exactly what is good and bad and I want to be able to say what I think when the other side is in power (like now).
20.09.2025 17:06 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This is close to my understanding of what is going on, though I'm not sure he necessarily thinks Kirk and Shapiro are 100% good faith actors. I think he thinks that engaging with figures on the other side who are already popular and mainstream does more good than harm.
17.09.2025 01:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0My personal feeling is, MOANA is actually Lin Manuel Miranda's career peak (to date), just incredibly strong numbers from start to finish and a top-tier villain song even though the character isn't properly the big bad
13.09.2025 01:01 β π 5 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0In 50 years, we'll look back on this era of cancerous brain rot, nihilism & ideological extremes with shame & regret that we never did a thing about the social media algorithms designed to reward polarization, outrage & hatred. But in the meantime, we'll all be fodder for the content slaughter mill

Yes, and I would say choosing to host a guest is significantly different from choosing to appear as a guest. Fair enough. I concede such examples aren't accounted for in my narrative.
08.09.2025 13:11 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I don't know about all the specific dealings he's having wrt his book, but I do know that he thinks dems are strategically dumb to not go on Joe Rogan (etc.) and get themselves in front of those huge audiences.
Not saying he's right about everything, but I also don't understand the hate.
I think he sees himself as strongly opposing this admin, and that a big part of the work that needs to be done is building a winning coalition to oppose Trump.
08.09.2025 06:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0For all those who think Ezra Klein is a Trump apologist or sane washer, I give you his chilling comments on the Trump administrationβs disappearance policy.
17.04.2025 13:40 β π 4 π 3 π¬ 1 π 0I find the whole thing with how Ezra Klein is perceived by the left (at least on here) both fascinating and disappointing. He has been speaking out about and explaining how the Trump admin will be much more dangerous this time around since well before inauguration.
17.04.2025 15:12 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Totally. I just hadn't really considered that there was much at stake for a personal project with no users.
13.04.2025 05:09 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I mean, I honestly thought that hobbyists using LLMs to generate code for personal projects was pretty harmless. I guess I was wrong.
13.04.2025 04:41 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Relatively harmless for just-for-fun hobby projects, that is.
13.04.2025 04:28 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There are many people using AI for this stuff just for fun though. It's not just professionals who should know better. I had thought that sort of thing relatively harmless. This is interesting news.

09.04.2025 17:04 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I don't know about the Bezos thing. But he likes Ezra Klein. They have a rapport. They agree on a lot. I would earnestly encourage you to listen to this. I think Ezra Klein has been misunderstood to some extent by many on the left.

09.04.2025 00:56 β π 204 π 40 π¬ 7 π 1I'm angry about his decision too, but in terms of the procedure for administrative stays, my understanding is that this is a normal thing that happens all the time.
07.04.2025 22:41 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I heard a social scientist talking recently about how people are rarely willing to admit to egregiously violating norms of their culture. So if the only choices they have are doing that or remaining in their current culture, they will usually remain. It's how cults retain people, apparently.
07.04.2025 21:39 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I agree. At the same time I feel like there are two concerns in tension. One is about straightforward truth and morality. The other is about political strategy and achieving desired outcomes under the constraints of human nature.
07.04.2025 21:35 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It's fixed now, in case anyone reading this is wondering.
07.04.2025 17:48 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0@seanmcarroll.bsky.social maybe you already know, but the Patreon/ad-free feed of the podcast has the April 2024 episode instead of the new one.
