No access outside UK

Sensory issues go underrecognized in part because they are processed internally, but also because autistic people, especially women & girls, often learn to mask them.

New publication! Our brilliant PhD student has published her first paper, 'Exploring the involvement of people with lived experience of mental disorders in co-developing outcome measures: a systematic review' in the Lancet Psychiatry!

Hello Niamh Molloy, Imogen Kilcoyne, Hannah Belcher @drhannahbelcher.bsky.social, Til Wykes - congratulations on your new review published today in The Lancet Psychiatry! As if that isn't exciting enough, we've also published a Mental Elf blog on your work. Please let us know what you think.

Still, my overall impression was that it was a worthwhile read and it is clear that the mental health industry does need a major reform, most notably driven by changes to the sociopolitical and economic landscape we live within. END.

Don't be angry at people who take medication and say it's saved their lives. Don't be angry at people who don't or who have been harmed by medication. This divide only serves to benefit those who make financial gains from our distress and personal experiences. 12/

mistrust, and stigma amongst us with select evidence, that of course makes for a more powerful argument and improves sales, without considering those it will affect. 11/

12.01.2025 19:20 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It's important we remain compassionate to all the different lived experiences of those with mental health difficulties, rather than use the information from books like this as a weapon against each other. 10/

12.01.2025 19:20 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It's saying that 'mental illness' is too often identified as an individual issue rather than a societal problem, that these industries are poorly regulated, and that research can be biased and financially incentivised, which might affect how we've come to view mental distress. 9/

12.01.2025 19:20 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

No, this book doesn't tell us that medication categorically never works, that mental illness never exists, nor that diagnostic categories are always inaccurate, or that all psychiatrists only consider biological causes. 8/

12.01.2025 19:20 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Whilst this might be outside the remit of the book, it's important to consider the effects of this information on individuals who are currently struggling with mental health issues. 7/

12.01.2025 19:20 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

What this book lacks is lived experience and the voices of those affected, as well as alternatives offered, especially those with severe mental illnesses. It talks about political reforms, but not changes at the individual level. 6/

12.01.2025 19:20 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Although, I was pleased with the mention of IAPT therapies, as I've mentioned in a previous post, how the motive behind introducing these was always to benefit the economy, not the individual. 5/

12.01.2025 19:20 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It's also difficult to overcome the fact that the therapy and wellness industry also could be accused of selling mental health in some way, which could be considered as another form of 'sedation', but which was carefully dodged in the book. 4/

12.01.2025 19:20 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It's hard to ignore the striking finding that psychiatric treatments have increased as mental health has worsened. However, many of the arguments made aren't new and lacked nuance but were persuasive in their use of extreme examples and generalisations 3/

12.01.2025 19:20 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

But the title 'sedated' is a little misleading and stigmatising, as medication is not the only focus. The book often veered off too far into politics, and the arguments weren't always clearly linked. 2/

12.01.2025 19:20 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

My review of 'Sedated' by Dr James Davies - you might be suprised that I enjoyed reading this book. I learnt quite a lot around the trends in mental health treatment and the economy, education, political movements etc. 1/

Patience review – this clunky depiction of autism just isn’t good enough A preposterous plot and terrible dialogue make for a deeply uninspired detective drama. Its nuance-free take on neurodivergence is embarrassingly clunky

Currently watching Patience on Channel 4 about an autistic police investigator. I have mixed reviews. This article sums most up, it's a very stereotypical view of autism that's quite outdated. However, I'm glad to see an autistic actor playing the role. www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio...
