Then we went for drinks.” “Stuff?” “Work stuff, mostly,” she admitted. “The new samples came in, and Jardine’s preliminary report suggests that...” She could see their eyes glaze over before she even had a chance to go into details. With a roll of the shoulders, she pulled up a seat. “It wasn’t the kind of date you’re probably thinking about. More like a structured group activity but the group was Maia and I. And it was a great time. We chatted until the sunlights dimmed and it was like we could keep going until they lit up again. But—” “But it wouldn’t work out because of the whole NEV thing, yeah?” “It worked out exactly as we wanted it to.” “Ah.” “Anyway,” Yana rose to her feet and cracked her knuckles, “we’re on for another night out next time I visit Habitat, and I’ll get to pick the activity. I would really like people to take this into account. Yes, arguably some of the worst people are not conventionally attractive in some way or another, but focusing on that and not their behavior, lack of empathy and compassion, only tears down everyone around you who shares that physical trait.
