Never mind that all these ridges and bends are trying their best to hypnotize you. Eyes on the path ahead. Teeth gritted, fists clenched, breath controlled. Just like walking into a scrap you don’t plan on losing.

I never realized, when I was a kid, that that was important.
That Picard, or Geordi, or Data, or Worf, were giving me life lessons.
That Data, who doesn't get jokes, or social cues, who works differently than anyone else, and who strives to mask?
Is just accepted. Part of the crew.
three panel webcomic 1st panel: one man says to another "we invented a robot that answers questions" 2nd panel: he continues "we just have to feed it 10 baby giraffes a day" 3rd panel: the other man asks "but it answers the questions correctly?" and the first man replies "oh my goodness, no. no no no no no."
It's Mandatory Monday and AI is clearly the future.

Probably something like this:
"Keep at it. You are not as bad as you think you are--I'm much better than you, and I can say that for sure.
Keep at it. Shed all the expectations and noise. You don't need to prove anything to anyone, because you already proved it to me."
lets be honest if they hadn't died in unrequited love and had got the families to sign on, the inevitable divorce between Romeo and Juliet would have been legendarily toxic

We were hand in hand, but I ran out of breath towards the end and she won. Then we just sat on the park to dry off, talked about, uh, stuff. Then we went for drinks.” “Stuff?” “Work stuff, mostly,” she admitted. “The new samples came in, and Jardine’s preliminary report suggests that...” She could see their eyes glaze over before she even had a chance to go into details. With a roll of the shoulders, she pulled up a seat. “It wasn’t the kind of date you’re probably thinking about. More like a structured group activity but the group was Maia and I. And it was a great time. We chatted until the sunlights dimmed and it was like we could keep going until they lit up again. But—” “But it wouldn’t work out because of the whole NEV thing, yeah?” “It worked out exactly as we wanted it to.” “Ah.” “Anyway,” Yana rose to her feet and cracked her knuckles, “we’re on for another night out next time I visit Habitat, and I’ll get to pick the activity. We’ll see if she’s as good at badminton as she is at swimming. How’s the bleeding?” “I think it stopped?”
Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!
#FirstLight is very light on romance, so no sweethearts, but in this scene from Book 2, Rook gets Yana talking about her recent date. Over a medical examination.

An illustration of a wide waterfall with a pond of green water below. There are green trees and bushes behind the waterfall, with a little bit of blue sky at the top. The words say Elvish Love Under a Waterfall, by Anna Verner in red.
I told my other I had written a spicy story for Valentine's Day. I was waiting for some jokes or hassles about it. Nope, their reaction was
"What? You did a spicy story and it's NOT about Raven and Trig?! You have to do one for them!!"
OK, so I've done one with them.

I would really like people to take this into account. Yes, arguably some of the worst people are not conventionally attractive in some way or another, but focusing on that and not their behavior, lack of empathy and compassion, only tears down everyone around you who shares that physical trait.

Unfold is a slow burn creature feature that only gets to the horror in the third act, but I wrote this to be cathartic for people hurting from greedy C-suites and the corrosive nature of capitalism.
