The deference we give to drivers is astonishing: speeding, blowing through red lights, crashing without a whisper; yet we jump on non-drivers the moment they step out of line.

my comment was on the correct β€œformal” addressing not making any comment on whether it β€œshould be.” but if both partners have the same last name I don’t see the issue with β€œDoctors Smith” to indicate both Smiths are Drs. If they have different titles then it would be β€œDr Joan and Mr John Smith” etc

This is actually the correct way to formally address if both are drs and have the same last name!

This piece gets at something that I've been struggling to articulate: We've seen this exact push-pull before. When Republicans were out of power in the 1990s they invented "political correctness" to pretend they were being censored. Then they went right back to censoring once they had power again.

I think if we actually enforced the idea that lying to Congress lands you in prison and ends your career, we wouldn’t have many of the problems we do. Republicans aren’t going to, so Dems need to try even if they think it won’t work

How Can We Live Together? - Boston Review Ezra Klein is wrong: shame is essential.

"Common decency stigmatizes people that do not participate in itβ€”removes them from voluntary association. We indeed have to live with one another, but terms and conditions apply."

Taking political positions that'll make it more likely to win Senate seats in Kansas and Ohio and Missouri. Trying to open your coalition to people you didn't want it open to before. Running pro-life Democrats.

I genuinely cannot believe that Ezra Klein said we should run pro-life candidates in Kansas, Ohio, and Missouri; three states that recently held abortion referendums where the pro-choice side won!

It is truly the lesson that Democrats refuse to learn no matter how many times it fails. What made the biggest impact - when Stacey Abrams mobilized the base and invested in get out the vote in GA and almost won. Fight the voter suppression and we can get the numbers.

Wild to see Klein continue to spiral down this path that so many others have gone before him and have been proven wrong time and again

Should We Let Public Transit Die? Urban-rural hostility is fueling a public transportation crisis in US cities. But demands to abandon bus and train riders ignore the economic and social costs of cutting service.

I have a major piece in Bloomberg Citylab today. Should the US let transit fail, as Pennsylvania is already doing? And if not, what are the arguments we need to let it succeed?

β€œWhy does transit seem to be in an endless emergency? Why is it so easy to assume that transit’s financial situation is hopeless? Because we have constructed our transportation funding streams to make transit’s costs visible, while the costs of car dependence are mostly concealed.”

But a more serious point I make from time to time: Trump is not acting alone in this, and blame must fall on the GOP and on the US conservative movement more broadly. Decades of rhetoric from the right brought us to this moment.

last night as i was trying to wind down for bed i had a unified theory of what the fuck just happened, and i wrote it down, and filed it under "well, i can't talk about this on main without sounding insane until and unless the perp gets caught and is provably a groyper"

anyways, great news! (1/X)

We should outlaw large trucks in city centers and require them to offload their cargo to the city to smaller trucks or kei cars at a way station outside the city.

If Charlie Kirk had been, say, a Black Panther or member of the Nation of Islam and went around college campuses saying white people weren't qualified to fly planes or deserved to die in mass shootings, no one would eulogize him by saying he was "practicing politics the right way."

11.09.2025 11:38 β€” πŸ‘ 726    πŸ” 133    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 3

The question the media won't ask Conservatives, gnashing of teeth, is what do they want to do about rising political violence? Conservatives' answer is either more violence but against people they perceive as their political enemies, or nothing. Meanwhile, we want less violence and gun control.

11.09.2025 00:03 β€” πŸ‘ 135    πŸ” 30    πŸ’¬ 4    πŸ“Œ 0

Also also: for the respectability politics people inclined to shush me because then the right will say the left is violent, where have you been? They have always said thatβ€”about peaceful protest, heckling in fancy restaurants etc. and they have never cared whether it’s true

10.09.2025 22:44 β€” πŸ‘ 335    πŸ” 39    πŸ’¬ 10    πŸ“Œ 1

The GOP will certainly politicize this no matter what comes to light about the shooter; they will rant and rave about the "violent left" and will make a hero of Kirk. But the plain truth of the matter is that permissive gun laws put every single one of us at risk.

Friendly reminder.

Road safety campaigns must speak directly to and target those that perpetrate the greatest harm.

Bikes don’t work for every person & every trip, just as cars don’t work for every person & every trip.

Our communities are better when individuals have the freedom to choose from multiple safe, efficient modes of travel.

Many people don't want to (or can't) bike to the grocery store (or work, or school), but those who choose to deserve a safe way to do so, and also secure places to lock up their bikes when they arrive.
