I was part of the internal Trump administration team trying to convince the president to end the shutdown in 2018 - 2019 — for 35 days — before people went hungry, workers lost pay, and government services collapsed.

Stuff like this didn’t used to happen. Legislators could not get away with claiming to support, let alone taking credit for, stuff they directly voted against. Now GOP does it regularly. Real testament to our stupid and complicit media and stupid voters

Are we sure that this is what Dems expected? Still seems plausible that they offered temporary ACA subsidy extension as an excuse to cave and may have backed into this because of GOP obstruction. Like when Obama proposed big spending cuts with smaller tax increases and GOP was too crazy to agree

This was a really good distillation of how the GOP spends money better than the Democrats. I would add that the relative scarcity of employment in Dem politics skews hiring towards top 10%ers, which in turn skews strategy towards what top 10%ers think make for good politics.
