GenAI truly was the worst technology to come along at this moment.

An energy and water guzzler when we most urgently need to take climate action.

A disinformation machine as our journalism fails.

A bias machine as fascism takes root.

A job killer in a cost of living crisis.

Canadians! Some action you can take is signing petitions actually going before the Canadian House of Commons.

Here's a petition aimed at closing the arms export loophole:

"but art should be accessible" it is, you can learn to draw, paint, collage, sculpt, make pixels. right now, starting today. art has never been more accessible monetarily nor physically than it is now in this age. access to artist labor and machine production is not an accessibility issue.

so much of enjoying art is looking for the artist's fingerprints, the handholds they leave behind in their work for you to follow. but when you observe or read anything ai-generated you learn to intentionally ignore these hooks because they are just mimicry, leading nowhere and meaning nothing

painting of the google homepage, in the text box someone has typed "if we fed all of the billionaires to wild dogs and split their fortunes amongst everyone, how much money would we each get? how many problems would that solve?"

Fascists hate art because it allows people to experience the power of a fantasy: that things are not what they seem, that other people experience things the way you do, that a better world is possible. Imagination is a dangerous weapon when your main tactic is "because I said so"

This please. It doesn't have to be elaborate, just hearing "I like this" or "this is so cute" really is nice and makes my day! I don't know how or why people started thinking it was annoying or insincere to give compliments but it's not. Artists like knowing if people resonate with things we make.

I like how this piece broadens beyond “puriteens” and “metoo” discourse into issues of self-surveillance and identity.

The modern internet has made us see ourselves from the outside rather than experiencing ourselves from the inside

Someone posted a video of a husband and wife shopping for interior decor. They wrote: "when will people finally acknowledge the epidemic of men marrying women and being turned gay."

Matt Walsh retweeted them and added: "Dudes like this were already gay. I’ve been married for 14 years and have never been home decor shopping, or even had an opinion on the subject, except for the one time when I had a painting custom made depicting me meeting a group of space aliens. It’s now hanging above a fireplace in our home."

I screenshot Walsh's comment and added: "For a while, it was believed that women and gay men are born with a natural sense for aesthetics. In reality, straight men, particularly American male Protestants, have simply barred themselves from taking an interest in aesthetics bc they think this makes them noble."

Finally, someone retweeted me and added: "Why does anyone listen to what this idiot has to say about aesthetics?" They attached a photo of Edward Hopper's 1942 painting "Nighthawks."

Someone took issue with me saying that American male Protestants are unique in how they've removed themselves from aesthetics. I thought it was obvs that I'm talking about fashion and interior decor, which today are coded as "gay interests," not paintings or architecture.

But let me elaborate. 🧵
