I really believe that by retaining orange in the flag, even in a slightly different shade, we missed a chance to create that separation and instead reinforced the very overlap we were trying to move beyond.

NOTE: I own a bunch of first-light merch, so like, yeah, I like it, but I also wish......

The new flag was an opportunity to establish a visual distinction between the City of Syracuse and the university’s commercial brand.

And it did it!

Google "Syracuse Flag" now and you get the so much better @firstlightsyr.com flag and its many options. We got separation and it worked!

These University flags were no more adopted by businesses, companies, etc. as part of their identities.

Similarly, the major way to show your "Syracuse" pride was through the marketing arm of the University (t-shirts, hats, scarfs, etc.) -- all echoed the Orange of a very different institution.

While it’s true that orange has “leaked” into the broader community from Syracuse University, that observation misses the larger point. Before the new city flag was adopted, a search for “Syracuse flag” yielded results almost entirely tied to the university
