#relatable FWIW, I can’t imagine you’ve said many truly dumb things in the moment. You’re a fantastic interviewer! You’re juggling a lot as an interviewer β€” being an active listener, figuring out what to ask next, watching the clock etc etc. Still, you made me think of this immortal skit:

I sort of get it. Much like now, in the 70s the world was going to sh*t and anyone with any kind of ethical sensitivity could be forgiven for going deeply inwards, including conceiving of the entirety of The Ring’s convoluted drama as happening within a single consciousness

Wagner's Ring and Its Symbols This book is about the poetical and musical symbols in Wagner's ring; and what Wagner brought, with all the suggestive artistry at his disposal, into symbolical and artistic consciousness, I as critic...

Sure but Donington’s Jungian/Hero’s Journey analysis of The Ring is legit fascinating

I own a couple books of interviews with him and he is a fascinating character, kind of endearing really. A true German mystic. The type of person that makes you excited about music and life regardless of whether what he is saying makes sense. Listening to his music has the same effect on me.

@katewagner.wehwalt.net it is wild! Have you ever ranked/reviewed different singers in the role? Like who is your favorite Sieglinde? Which singers captured different aspects of her? Etc. I would love to know your opinions!

Wagner's Ring Commentary on and a concise, lucid interpretation of the opera world's most complex masterwork, expanded from the author's popular intermission talks during Met Opera broadcasts. "Anyone, whether know...

This is the book that got me into the Ring. A slim volume and a pleasure to read. A great companion to watching the 1990 Met Opera traditional staging, which gives you a reference for other stagings. Jessye Norman’s portrayal of Sieglinde is one for the ages!

When anyone from SCTV dies it’s like 30 people have died. Every character they created was as alive as anyone else you’ve ever met.

I Saw the World End Wagner's Ring is a great masterpiece. But because of the work's rich complexity it is difficult to think sensibly about its text and music. Deryck Cooke, author of The Language of Music and completer ...

Cook’s book on the Ring is a real gem, full of insights that came from his many years of living with the Ring. Sadly, he died at 57 of a cerebral hemorrhage before he could complete it, a warning to all of us not to think *too* hard about the Ring:

I also warmly recommend Deryck Cook’s invaluable introduction to the Ring, an explanation and analysis of Wagner's system of leitmotifs with 193 music examples either extracted from Solti’s recording or specially recorded for the album:
