Of course at one level: who cares what the Tories do any more? But at another, apparently wildly insane ideas like β€œput judges under the control of politicians” have a habit of becoming mainstream political thinking these days

No sudden rupture is now required for the far right to take power in this country. For what we're seeing is a steady normalisation of extremists by the Conservative and Labour Parties, BBC, Telegraph, Mail and others. A shift once considered unthinkable beings to look acceptable, even inevitable.🧡

The far-right is never conservative. It always attacks established social institutions, the ones important for democracy and social peace. Because it knows they will be a source of opposition.

Your reminder that Robert Jenrick isn’t interested in judges being unbiased or apolitical: on the contrary, like the far right media, he wants to intimidate or control judges into making decisions which reflect *his* political biases

This is a lie.

There are many criticisms you might sensibly and truthfully make of the Sentencing Council and the Sentencing Guidelines. I’ve been making them for years.

But this is an outright lie. Pure fabrication. A fraud on the public.

In a bold move, Robert Jenrick is set to unveil a controversial plan targeting what he calls 'activist' judges, at the Conservative Party conference.

I say this with the bluntness it requires: they will get people murdered if this continues. This is not just populism anymore either: it’s completely unhinged and a deliberate choice that does endanger lives. I am not saying this lightly at all.

Asylum hotel provider makes Β£180m profit despite claims of inedible food and rationed loo paper Asylum seekers and charities tell BBC of

Finally!!! The real scandal of the asylum hotels. Why, instead of shining the light on these parasites, months were spent on demonising vulnerable people at their mercy?

Thing is, if you’re a lawyer and a Tory - maybe you’re even a Tory peer - and you fail to speak out very clearly and publicly against this stuff, you’re signalling for all to see that you’re at best comfortable with fascism and the destruction of the rule of law

Lots of similarities between Hungary and the US in terms of a politicised, compliant judiciary, no?

And of course these proposals have to be seen in the context of a concerted and increasing drive by the right and far right of the UK political/media spectrum to destroy democratic and human rights constraints on government power

A human rights position is universal, requiring us all to extend rights and protections to those we disagree with

Yes, you can deny some groups are owed human rights, but only by denying their humanity

I went to @greenparty.org.uk conference - and unlike Labour, didn't get the boot.

But will the Greens succeed in convincing Labour voters - and what about the threat of Farage?

many benefits are household claims. imagine you're british and your spouse has ILR, and you're told that you're being denied benefits because your spouse is from "other parts of the world and they can leave". imagine if you lose your job and your spouse can't claim jobseekers, so you end up homeless

What I find very impressive about Zack is he could just sit back and let the greens be what they have been previously and coast, he doesn’t have to stick his neck out and speak out like he has done, about difficult topics would be much easier for him not to and I find that very commendable
