I got a DVD of Hard Boiled for Christmas, and one of the delights was watching it with my daughter, who then invited all of her friends over to watch it.

It is brilliant, and if you aren't sure then the first season does work as a one-and-done so you can stop there if you aren't digging it. But you will never guess where it winds up from the start.
