This children's museum has a simulated package delivery thing my kids love

Damn, maybe they actually do yearn for the mines

Much of PBS will survive, as CPB was a minority of its budget. But it's still a huge blow. It will be hardest outside the big markets. What's going on is truly despicable.

In the case of many Ivies, the only people paying the sticker price were international students and rich kids. For years, American students upper middle class on down have been guaranteed a debt-free education.

The Cubs winning the World Series on November 2, 2016. As a Cubs fan, this was an ecstatic night.

I should have known that it meant something had fractured in the space-time continuum. The errors in reality went from fun to terrifying pretty quickly from there.

It's funny as hell to read that thread since my sister's childhood friend is Chaz's granddaughter. She didn't brag about it, so I didn't know she was fam to Ebert until after he died.

Most recent: crushing it at a musical theater camp recital. When I was their age, I had crippling performance fright, so it's so cool to see them doing great and having fun

The idea of a state with subordinated ethnicities is even more the norm. I'm American, and I live in a country where the indigenous people were forced off their lands multiple times and to this day are allocated only marginal land in reservations.

23.07.2025 23:32 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It doesn't sound insane because it's the norm. I didn't realize until my late 30s that the concept of the ethnostate is only as old as the French revolution.

Has there ever been a CEO who's so vocal about how bad his product is going to be for society?

Kafkaesque. And especially infuriating when people's health/life depends on it.

If I hate my employer-provided health insurer, I'm pretty much shit out of luck.

22.07.2025 16:58 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The result is a fairly efficient, very competitive market, very much unlike health.

22.07.2025 16:58 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I totally believe you. For-profit health insurance seems like an awful industry. I'm really speaking about property & casualty, like home and auto, which is very different. It's very standardized, straightforward to shop for, and you can switch carriers at any time.

22.07.2025 16:58 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Regulation is a critical part of making this all work, so that there are competitive, transparent markets with lower barriers to entry, low switching costs and standards.

22.07.2025 16:36 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Improvements in underwriting reduce cross-subsidy and adverse selection, which hurt low risk policyholders, by making high risk policyholder pay their fair share.

22.07.2025 16:36 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Efficiency can be improved to lower costs, which either improves unit profitability, or allows for lower prices and better competitiveness. The latter is good for policyholders.

22.07.2025 16:36 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I disagree with that last statement. At least in property & casualty. Unless you think all for-profit companies are inherently predatory, I don't see why it's different from any other industry.

But holy crap does he also have a self-destructive streak.
