Saw The Beths tonight in Paris. IMO they're the tops of any band at that stage in their career. Just incredible at every aspect of their craft: writing perfect songs, playing them flawlessly, and putting on a wide-ranging mesmerizing showβeven after having their instruments stolen! Check them out!

Nau mai.
I spent much of the days listening to The Beths to prep for seeing them tomorrow in Paris. Then just read this on their (fabulous) travel blog: the band's van was broken into and most of their instruments were stolen! Why can't we have nice things?!

"Academic levels of discourse" is an anti-intellectual smack against those of us who spend a lot of words to analyze things that normal people find obvious. It's her meta-snobbery against the professional snobs!

Grave of Pierre and Marie Claire Bourdieu at the Cemetery Père-Lachaise in Paris
At Cemetery du Père-Lachaise in Paris today, I checked out Pierre Bourdieu's final habitus. Everyone at Père-Lachaise belongs to the elite, but among the thousands of graves there, he's clearly exhibiting middling cultural and economic capital.

Leaving Amsterdam after a great three day stay, the most impressive (practical) thing we saw was being able to check in and out of every bus/tram/train by just swiping your debit card or phone - you then get charged for rides at the end of each day! Every city needs to copy this system ASAP!!

I keep thinking that his part in Almost Famous is autobiographical, and it's his confession that he killed someone in a hit-and-run years ago. I find it helps explain his persona.

Turns out Vermont is actually part of it - just didn't make it into the announcement. [But yes, we do keep re-electing a shitty Republican governor because he claims to be a nice guy.]
