Mostly it's a mix of power consumption, remote offsite backups, and storage. That sounds like a critical bug that would get fixed ASAP, anything relating to arrays not being read properly and data corruption.

Ugh. I had been seeing Synology as a tool for small/medium business solution. QNAP was the other one but a bit pricier. Now I am bumping up against needing 10gb nics and seeing QNAP allowing faster. Being able to sell customers on a small low power NAS was really handy.

It'll depend on your level of investment ($$$$), tech skills, and time. From a Pi, a small home NAS, to full on homelab, there's plenty of options. Starting small is usually best. The Pi is great to learn on.

For home storage, starting easy with a low powered NAS is just fine for 90% of peeps. !!But avoid Synology!! Their 2025+ units require Synology brand HDDs. QNAP is better.
For the big stuff, playing with TrueNAS or if you're spicy, a generic Linux distro is fun to homelab.
