BBC Radio 4 - Free Thinking, Queer Histories How do we apply modern LGBT+ language and identities to historical figures?

Today is the start of LGBT+ History Month in the UK. I joined some cool people a while ago to reflect on why queer and trans histories are rich and powerful. Our histories can illuminate the possibilities of activism and politics, as we work to build a better world.

Keep the conversation going.

Council of Europe Assembly backs ban on conversion practices | ILGA-Europe The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has adopted a landmark resolution calling on states to ban conversion practices.

β€œThe Assembly has now called on member states to act swiftly, arguing that ending conversion practices requires not only legal bans, but sustained political will, properly funded services for survivors, and public education to prevent further harm.”

This is welcome news from Europe. πŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

β€œThe unsatisfactory situation in which post-operative transsexuals live in an intermediate zone as not quite one gender or the other is no longer sustainable.”

As the European Court of Human Rights made clear in Goodwin v UK (2003), forcing trans folk to live as a β€œthird sex” erodes their dignity.

Polish gov’t plans more rights for LGBT couples The move is not enough for many activists but too much for conservatives.

β€œPoland’s ruling coalition has adopted plans to legally recognize β€˜significant others’ in informal relationships, including between same-sex couples.”

This limited legal recognition of same-sex couples in Poland is a small step as LGBT folks there fight for greater legal and social support.

It’s World Human Rights Day. Today is a reminder that political talk of β€œrespecting dignity” is just gaslighting when governments deport people who need asylum, enable genocide, censor LGBT folks, trash disabled lives, and police women’s bodies. We must refuse this and cultivate our shared humanity.
