10 - use layering! especially with kicks, drums and anything playing chords. layering of different sounds + lower octave layering of certain notes from chords. but try to keep it around 3 layers, just because if you go overboard, you're losing the plot and over-complicating the sound design.

9 - You probably don't need to become a music theory expert (unless that is on your path) but you need to know what key stuff is in. I didn't know how much I needed keys, scales and modes. And a lot of it's very easy, you've probably already been doing it by imitating other music.

If it's been held back too long, it might have to be scrapped and just considered as progress that was made but didn't happen in the public eye. But my question would be, when is that hypothetical better work coming? If it's not here yet, putting out a few of those tracks might be moving forward

8 - If you're making music with drums, make them hit, make them groove, mix them first. Rhythm is not a stoic plate to arrange a meal of modern music on. It is the protein, the texture, the seasoning. Shy drums make for hesitant music

6 - those who listen well create well. Dig for stuff you haven't heard of as much as possible. Do not use an algorithm. Find out what your favorites listened to. Tell a friend w/the aux to surprise you. Search "music similar to x" and find real people recs on forums, reddit, blogs

5 cont'd - even if you aren't able to make sounds as shiny and cool as preset ones for a while, if you know the basics, you will be able to make stuff that fits your tracks and personality perfectly. Once it becomes second nature, you won't want to spend time retrofitting other ppl's sounds as much

5 - thing I was SUPER wrong about publicly like 6 years ago and still think about even if no one else does, that designing your own synth sounds is overrated in the modern times with the thousands of available presets. Incredibly wrong lol (cont'd)

4 - innate fear of the vibe of sending out your contracts is the thin 8.5 x 11 barrier keeping freelance musicians from healthier work lives. I am so sorry, it is time to get papered up.

3 - re. techniques, even though I make dance music I don't like making drops. I respect them, but I don't want to spend my time on it and that's been fine for me. People don't remark on it and DJs play me. Sweeps and crashes are the last thing I add, more like a mix touch than musical information

2 - Go all-in on tools and techniques for the kind of stuff you want to make. General knowledge of the common big effect/synth types is good, but after that try finding the one that checks YOUR boxes. ie do you want vintage delay/reverb feel or something odd and ultra-modern

1 - Above all else, be putting stuff out. Do not hold onto ideas that you like for the perfect time to finish or release it. You have to strike while the iron is hot. I have lost interest in a lot of tracks by not following this.
