This is a wildly irresponsible headline by NBC News (that I discovered via chyron on our local news channel over lunch). Greenland can’t “cost as much as $700 billion”, because it’s not for sale! Could post “Buying a unicorn could cost $700 billion” because both are equally possible!

I got a phone call from an automated local law enforcement notification service telling me to shelter in place, which woke me up. The “elevated police presence” triggering this is two miles from my house. I’m currently 150 miles from my house. Then I see this. Guess I’m up!

The closest thing I can think of was Coloretto. Pit also kind of fits this bill, though way more on the chaos end! Similar-vein-but-not-quite-the-same ones include Show Manger, Finca, and Big City/Foundations of Rome.

As someone whose daughter was enchanted with the first, begged me to take her out to see the sequels, watched in wonder, read up on the lore and knew it backwards and forwards, quizzed me on it regularly…I can’t say if it’s had wider cultural impact. But it blessedly impacted a loved one profoundly.

And the scene with the construction rental manager genuinely took my breath away.

Truly one of my favorite movies, and one of the best and nuanced movies on Christianity that I’ve ever seen. When one person rants in front of a picture of the crucified Christ that “we need warriors, not pussies who will lie down and take it”, it was such a powerful juxtaposition.

This Mississippi trip seems rougher this year - loneliness is hitting very hard, plus the twins need a lot of attention. But the kids are having a good Christmas, and I’m powering through. Might even get back to running in the morning if I can swing the time.
